Grading work is under way on the 35-megawatt solar plant Arizona Public Service Co. is developing in the Foothills off 40th Street between Foothills Boulevard and Fortuna Road, confirmed Jenna Shaver, APS spokeswoman.
The plant will be located on nearly 400 acres of state land. The 35-year lease will provide $10 million to help fund Arizona public education.
The plant is expected to come online in two phases — the first 17 MW will reach commercial operation by March 2013; the remaining 18 MW will reach commercial operation by December 2013. When fully operational, it will generate enough power for approximately 8,700 homes. The power will serve Yuma-area customers.
APS has hired Atlanta, Ga.-based AMEC to construct the facility. During construction, the project will create more than 100 jobs.
In other Foothills-area building activity, plans are in review for a General Dollar store to be built at 12638 S. Foothills Blvd.
And here's more details about the new Sears Hometown store that opened last week in the Foothills. The address is 11411 S. Fortuna Road and the phone number is 1-602-715-8562. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.
While the store sells hard goods such as appliances and lawn equipment, customers are able to order anything that a full-line Sears carries and have it delivered to either their home or the store, reported by franchise owner Cinthia Lopez.
