A Bright Future For Nyngan Solar Farm

An estimated 450 jobs are to be created when two large-scale solar farms are built at Nyngan and Broken Hill, starting in 2014.

The power company, AGL and its manufacturing partner have won a $130 million Solar Flagships tender, which is added to another $40 million in federal money for two universities to conduct research on the project and $65 million from the state.

AGL's Anthony Fowler says there will be 1.6 million panels at Nyngan.

"The one at Nyngan will be the largest solar farm in the southern hemisphere," he said.

The Energy Minister, Martin Ferguson, says he will refer the unsuccessful tenderers to the new Australian Renewable Energy Agency.

"ARENA has got about $1.7 billion for further investment in renewable energy."

Those companies include Infigen which is planning solar farms at Manildra and Nyngan.

Mr Fowler says the company will consult the community before the farms are built.
"Solar for example, doesn't produce any pollution, doesn't have any impact, on the water supply, doesn't radiate any light out of those panels so we don't expect any significant community concerns," he said.
