Tucson Airport Looks to Construct Solar Power Plant

The Tucson Airport Authority board has agreed to lease 50 acres to an electric utility to construct a solar power plant.

The site south of the Tucson International Airport will be rented to Tucson Electric Power for more than $46,000 a year. TEP will build a 5 megawatt photovoltaic array on the site.

The site is next to the airport's existing power distribution site and the power will be fed into TEP's grid. The plant approved Tuesday will be built by Solon and should be up and running by late next year.

TEP installed solar panels on an airport building in 2007.
